916 Ink empowers students in the Sacramento region with creative writing, thereby developing strong readers and inspired writers who lead a higher quality of life due to increased literacy skills and improved academics.

The organization, founded by AWA Affiliate Katie McCleary in 2011, has affected the lives of many young people.

From their website:

We have published more than 75 books, serving more than 1,700 young authors in the Sacramento region. 916 Ink has served more than 3,000 youths in more than 30 workshops and summer camps, and 45 field trips to the Imaginarium.

916 Ink offers a 3.5 hour creative writing field trip experience for grades K-12 in our Imaginarium creative writing space located at 3301 37th Avenue, Sacramento. Find Your Voice is for students 9th-12th grade, and is 45 hours of literary arts instruction, that includes five, polished pieces of creative work for publication.”

Among many other accomplishments, 916 Ink has achieved the following:

  • Published over 1700 youth writers in over 50 professional books.
  • Awarded the Inspire Giving Grant from the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce in 2015.
  • Won the People’s Choice Award and Coaches Award at Social Venture Partners Fast Pitch Program.
