Truth Spoken – Truth Heard

by Christie Turano

Say it was nine minutes and 29 seconds and not eight minutes.
The ball in my stomach tightens.
I take a breathe.
Say we all watched and knew some laughed.
My jaw clenches and I feel constricted.
I take a breathe.
Say I didn’t believe what I am seeing and I could not turn away.
I felt grateful for the young witnesses.
The witnesses who stood there and held their phones up,
asking pleading with the officer to take his knee off.
Asking the officer why he would not take his knee off of
George Floyd’s neck.
And sadness pulls at my eyes and my face feels like it is melting into a pool of tears.
Say the people watched and told the truth about what they saw and
I feel planted by the tree of life that is George Floyd – in his truth – that I hear now.

Thank you for joining us to Write Around the World!

For the rest of the summer, watch our blog! We are sharing writing from AWA’s yearly marathon fundraiser, which happened this year all-online throughout the month of May.

We offer this series in appreciation for the incredible community of writers and workshop leaders that sustain us. If you’re inspired and would like to be part of the fundraiser, please donate!
