AWA’s Board Vice Chair Kate Marshall-Flaherty generously shares this about our strategic retreats: Although I have been a Board member for over four years, this is my first “Bulletin from the Board,” a brilliant idea that came out of last year’s Board retreat, when we met online to discuss and dream, to ponder and plan,…
At AWA’s 2021 workshop leader retreat, Maureen Buchanan Jones delivered this talk on the new sixth Essential Practice of the AWA method. It is titled “Talk on Listening: ‘I listen, drinking in’” after a quote from Pat Schneider.

Pat Schneider, the founder of AWA, passed away on August 10, 2020. This post on our blog is a memorial to her. Please share your stories and photos of Pat in the comments.
I have been so moved by the response to Write Around the World, our month-long marathon of donation-based, online writing sessions. Our aim this year was to help, to bring people together to experience the liberation and healing of the AWA method, rather than to raise a specific amount. For that reason, we set variable donation levels—some writers attended for as little as $1.
Latter from guy howard klopp: “Yes, I really do write my name in all lower case letters—perhaps it is an affectation or maybe just a core belief I have to accomplish great deeds to deserve capitalization.”
AWA leaders across the country are taking their offerings online to make writing together accessible during this time of isolation. Workshop leaders, if you have an online offering, please post it to our Event Calendar!
Dear AWA Friends,
The AWA Board had a great time meeting up over video-conference for a series of planning sessions. It was a wonderful way to get to know and orient our new members, Andrea and Guy. They’ll both be introducing themselves in future newsletters. Since we’re happily immersed in AWA’s big picture, we’d love to continue the conversation with you.
Dear AWA Friends,
We’ve had another exciting year at AWA. We trained 50 new workshop leaders; we supported 220 workshop leaders through our affiliate program; and we hope to raise $6000 with our year-end fundraising drive.
